Christmas Tree Recycling in Los Angeles County

From the Santa Clarita blog.

In with the new year and out with the old tree!

Well another Christmas season has come and gone.  And so the holiday aftermath begins: finishing and washing the casseroles and platters, running from store to store returning and exchanging gifts, helping the in-laws pack and getting them to the airport as soon as possible–thank goodness most of us won't have to worry about hunting down a recycling center to properly dispose of our Christmas trees!  In fact, most of us won't even have to cut them up just to stuff them in our recycle bins.

LA County, and many cities therein–City of Los Angeles included–are offering curbside recycling of trees.  Here are some general guidelines:  Get you tree at the curb by 6am of your normal trash day prior to 15 January 2011; remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, stands etc., trees should be 6 feet or less, if not then cut them.  Specifics for the City and County of Los Angeles and suburbs are listed below.

County of Los Angeles
Los Angeles County is providing CURBSIDE Christmas tree recycling through January 15, 2011.  Residents in UN-incorporated County areas can conveniently recycle their tree by placing it at curbside on their regular trash collection day.

Residents living in incorporated cities within the County can drop off their trees at designated collections sites if their city does not have curbside collection.

All ornaments, including tinsel, decorations, and metal and plastic tree stands must be removed from the tree before it can be left at the curb or turned into a collection site.

The trees collected by residential waste haulers will be recycled into compost, mulch, or ground cover.

To view more information on the County's Christmas tree recycling program, locate tree collection sites, and to see city-specific Christmas tree recycling guidelines, go to www.cleanla.com or call 1(800) CLEANLA.

The City of LA Bureau of Sanitation has expanded CURBSIDE collection for Christmas trees. If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place it inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

Using your green bin to recycle a Christmas tree?
1. REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from the tree
2. CUT tree in pieces to fit into the green bin, and
3. PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin for regular pick-up on collection day. Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch.

Residents of multifamily buildings are requested to place their Christmas tree at the curbside on the day of collection by the Bureau of Sanitation.

Visit the City website at www.lacity.org for collection day information

Recreation & Park and Fire Station locations will accept Christmas trees for ONE DAY ONLY (see date and time below). Some locations will not be open. Check the listing on this page. There will be NO giveaways and we will NOT be accepting holiday wrapping and packaging material at sites.

Steve Roden: In Between, a 20 Year Survey
Opening: September 11, 7-9pm
Exhibition: September 12, 2010 - January 9, 2011
Curator: Howard N. Fox
Gallery Hours: Noon-5pm (closed Mondays)

Pasadena artist Steve Roden is known internationally as an abstract painter, sculptor, installation artist, and sound artist whose works employ a strong presence of irregular geometries—a distinctive palette that ranges from somber tones, bright colors, and segmented all-over compositions. This is the first exhibition to bring together Roden's art in all its divergent forms and reveals his work as a homogenous, conceptually coherent practice.
In the Mezzanine Gallery

NewTown: Convergences
Opening: September 11, 7-9pm
Exhibition: September 12, 2010 - January 9, 2011
Gallery Hours: Noon-5pm (closed Mondays)

In one of NewTown’s most ambitious gallery shows, eleven digital and media artists appropriate the ubiquitous tools of their media into cutting-edge, highly personal, curiously accessible experimental art forms. Convergences seamlessly integrates media with sculpture and installation into an immersive experience. The exhibition will be a multi-station journey through a labyrinth of interactions, aesthetics and technologies, from garage pillaged elegance to experimental circuitry. The exhibition will feature work by artists; Nancy Buchanan and Ismael De Anda, Claudia Bucher, Robert Ladislas Derr, Heidi Kumao, Katja Loher, Lisa Mann, Anne Oren, Steve Shoffner, Rachel Siegel, Trixy Sweetvittles, and Laura Yilmaz.

In the Artist Studio @ One Colorado

Carly Steward: The Arrangement

24 Smith Alley, Pasadena | View Map
Exhibition: Through January 10, 2011
Gallery Hours: Noon-9pm (Wednesdays), 10am-6pm (Saturdays & Sundays)

One Colorado artist-in-residence Carly Steward's The Arrangement creates an ongoing collaborative installation between viewer and artist. It explores elements of exhibition design, lighting, wall color, space arrangement and display tools. The exhibition space is filled with empty, movable display objects varying in scale, form, and color such as shaped pedestals, build-ups and mounts. Visiting both the exhibition space and the studio space will give the visitor a behind the scenes look at the installation process as well as experience the overall installation as a display making factory.

Protest the War in Afghanistan

End the Wars Now!
December 18 Protest & Vigil in L.A.

U.S./NATO Out of Afghanistan!
Bring the Troops Home in Time for the Holidays!
Money for Jobs, Education & Healthcare: Not War!

Saturday, Dec. 18, 6pm
NW corner of Hollywood Blvd. & Highland Ave., Los Angeles

Click here to endorse the December 18 Protest & Vigil.
http://www2.answercoalition.org/site/R?i=069a7BLteixpsgNWiXvUFQ..

Make this holiday season one of solidarity, peace, justice and
struggle. Join ANSWER Coalition, other anti-war/peace groups and
students, veterans and community organizations on Saturday, Dec. 18
for a protest and vigil in Los Angeles.

We'll rally at the busiest street corner in Los Angeles on the
busiest shopping day of the year to say no to U.S. wars, racism
and all attacks on working and poor people.

There will be anti-war banners and signs, photos of children affected
by U.S. occupations and proxy wars, hundreds of candles, veterans
just returning from a mass anti-war action in Washington, D.C.,
well-known speakers, musicians, Korean drummers and more. In
addition, we call on artists and poets to help make this event even
more exciting, visual and inclusive.

The U.S. war on Afghanistan is in its 10th year with no end in sight.
U.S. troops still occupy Iraq. The government continues to fund the
Israeli war state that occupies and oppresses Palestinians. Each day,
over $500 million in U.S. taxpayer dollars goes to fund
war on working and poor people abroad as millions of people in the
United States are losing jobs, homes, health insurance, unemployment
benefits and finding it harder to survive. This must end. We have
to let the White House, Congress and everyone know that we will
continue to build a movement for peace, equality and real change.

Join us on December 18 to demand:

* Stop the wars! Bring the troops home now!
* U.S./NATO out of Afghanistan! U.S. out of Iraq!
* Hands of Iran, Korea, the Philippines ...
* End U.S. aid to Israel! Free Palestine!
* Money for jobs, education, healthcare, housing--not war!
* Stand against racism, immigrant bashing, sexism and
anti-LGBT bigotry!

Let's unite to stop U.S. wars abroad and demand funding for people's
needs at home!

Protest & Vigil sponsored by ANSWER Coalition, March
