Los Angeles Weekend Events Honoring Dr Martin Luther King Jr


Even before President Reagan established Martin Luther King Jr's birthday as a national holiday in 1986, communities came together to celebrate his life and legacy.  The following is a list of events in the Los Angeles area for 2011 where you can join in honoring his legacy too.

Martin Luther King Day is also a national day of service–a chance to give back to you community.  LA Works has some great volunteer opportunities for the Los Angeles area.  Check them out here.  LA Works is a non-profit organization that coordinates volunteering in the Los Angeles area all year long.  You can also visit http://www.mlkday.gov/ and enter your ZIP code to find volunteer opportunities in your area.

Get On The Bus!

In the spirit of the vision of Dr Martin Luther King Jr's "the beloved community," the city of West Hollywood invites you to the official launch of "Get On The Bus," a community based arts/education initiative dedicated to the empowerment and enrichment of the city's youth.  Keynote speech by Franklin Sirmans, Chief Curator of LACMA and performance by DeNetria Champ.  Reception at 6PM and launch at 7PM.  Admission is free.

MLK's Legacy: Stop War and Racism

The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) will hold a public forum honoring the work of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.  You are invited to join the discussion as the PSL looks at Dr King's pro working-class legacy and learn how we can fight against war and racism today.

Saturday 15 January
City of Long Beach Martin Luther King Jr Peace and Unity Parade and Celebration

The city of Long Beach will celebrate King Day on Saturday with a parade 10:30 starting at Anaheim Street and Martin Luther King Jr Avenue and continuing down the avenue to Martin Luther King Jr Park.  At the park will be entertainment, food, booths, crafts, merchandise vendors, and a children's play area with games and rides.  The event is from 12:30 PM until 5:30 PM.

MLK Kidz Party

Entertainer Michael Cladis will provide an introduction to the life and teachings of King with music, art, face painting, story telling, & improv games, and more!  This event will take place at Virginia Avenue Park's from 9 AM till 12 noon.  This is a free event.

6th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Day Celebration

Culver City will recognize the achievements of Dr. King, our Nobel Prize winning civil rights leader on his birthday. This day of honor will be commemorated by a full-day of festivities. The event will be hosted by celebrity guest Keith David, Actor and Narrator of both stage and screen, most notably for films Crash, The Lottery Ticket, Death at a Funeral, Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming, There’s Something About Mary, Barbershop, Men at Work and so much more.  Everyone is invited! Featured screening of award-winning documentary Freedom Riders dramatically captures the journey of the civil rights movement that changed America forever by filmmaker Stanley Nelson.   Free Admission and Refreshments!

Empowered To Realize The Dream

Workshops featuring breakout sessions for the community and attendees.  Event will feature Los Angeles County Supervisor, Mark Ridley-Thomas; California Attorney General, Kamela Harris and The Empowerment Congress.  This is a free event which starts at 8AM, continental breakfast provided.  YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT.  Registration ends Friday 14 January at 12 noon.

Gardena Martin Luther King Jr Parade and Celebration

The city of Gardena will hold its 27th annual MLK Jr Parade and Celebration on Saturday.  The parade will start at 10 AM at Marine Ave and Van Ness Ave and will feature bands, celebrities, drum lines, drill teams, classic cars and more.  Radio personalites, Don Amiche and Tami Mac (102.3 FM), will be this year's Grand Marshals.

MLK Jr Scholarship Gospel Concert

Christ Our Redeemer AME Church will hold its 11th annual Scholarship Gospel Concert.  Every year the event is designed to raise funds for deserving college students and to honor two college students who embody the character and leadership of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.  Headlining this year will be Grammy Award winner Beverly Crawford.  The concert will be held at 4 PM at the church in Irvine and admission is free.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr Celebration

The city of Inglewood's annual celebration of Dr Martin Luther King Jr will begin at 9AM with an ecumenical service at Tabernacle of Faithful Central Bible Church.  "Believe, Achieve and Succeed" is this year's theme.  Performances will be given by local choirs and community groups.  Also participating will be city officials and celebrities, Michaela Periera (of KTLA 5 Morning News) and Gbenga Akinnagbe (of CBS's "The Good Wife).  Speeches will be given by the winners of the city-wide MLK Day Speech contest.

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 5th Annual Commemorative Concert

The Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra will also offer this free concert on Sunday 16 January 16 at 3:30 p.m. at the SGI Auditorium. The concert, featuring violinist Danielle BelĂ©n, will include Revueltas' "Redes," Vieuxtemps' "Violin Concerto No.5" and Mendelssohn's "Symphony No. 5” (the Reformation symphony). The concert is free to the public.

Martin Luther King Jr, A Celebration! One Dream, A National Influence, A World of People.

The California African-American Museum celebrates the inspiration of one man's dream, his past presence and continued legacy.  View film screenings of his speeches and experience performances on the main stage with an array of artists representing the diverse communities of MLK's dream.  Admission is free.

Autry Museum: Hands On Experience

The Autry Museum will keeps its doors open on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In honor of the holiday, visitors can expect a hands-on history lesson about African Americans in the West, a museum-wide scavenger hunt, and gold panning. The Autry is the great place for families looking to commemorate the day with a fun but educational twist.

Los Angeles Kingdom Day Parade

The city of Los Angeles' annual Kingdom Day Parade will take place on Monday beginning at Western Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd at 11AM and end at Leimert Park with a celebration including local politicians and African-American celebrities.

Monday 17 January
25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

Val Zavala, KCET’s vice president of news and public affairs and anchor of its “SoCal Connected,” will be the keynote speaker at the multi-ethnic interfaith program that will include inspirational readings, speakers, musical performances and presentations of scholarships will take place at the SGI-USA Auditorium in Santa Monica.  The celebration will be followed by a “community involvement fair,” from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at 606 Wilshire Blvd.

Cake For King!
The California African-American Museum will be open on Monday 17 January for MLK Day events.  At 11AM there will be film screenings and a hands on workshop led by Teresa Tolliver.  At 1PM, Victoria Burnett will be performing songs in the Gallery of Discovery honoring Dr King's legacy.  Stop by following the Kingdom Day Parade for cupcakes and cake at 2PM celebrating the birth of Martin Luther King Jr.  At 2:45PM there will be live excerpts read from Dr King's speeches by Gerald C. Rivers highlighting Dr King's leadership in the American civil rights movement.
