Los Angeles Gun Buyback Program [2011]

The City of Los Angeles Gun Buyback program returns in 2011 with six locations throughout the city on Saturday 7 May.  Gift certificates of $100 and $200  will be given to people who turn in weapons–no questions asked.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, those who turn in shotguns, handguns and rifles will get a $100 gift certificate from Ralphs Supermarket or Visa.  People who turn in assault weapons will get a $200 gift certificate. The certificates will be handed out while supplies last, and authorities reserve the right to limit the number of weapons turned by an individual.
According to the San Fernando Valley Sun, which spoke with LAPD Capt. Ivan Minsal, LAPD promises that no questions will be asked of those who turn guns in and that "law enforcement officials will not be taking pictures of participants, nor will they be logging license plate numbers or running ballistic tests on the guns that are turned in."
The LAPD asks that the weapons be transported unloaded and in the trunk of vehicles.  Stolen weapons will be returned to their rightful owners, and the rest will be destroyed.
Last year, more than 2,500 weapons were turned in to the LAPD in a similar event, and in 2009, more than 1,700 weapons were turned in.
