Long Beach Mid-City Studio Tour [June 2011]

Long Beach artists will open their studios on Saturday and Sunday, June 4th and 5th, 2011 from 11 AM to 5 PM. The public is invited to see a diverse range of art works, including paintings, mixed media constructions, handmade artists’ books, prints, photographs, and jewelry.

The free event is called The Mid-City Studio Tour because of the neighborhood locations of the artists’ studios within Long Beach. This fifth biennial program celebrates the vital visual artist community in this city. Sue Ann Robinson, known nationally for her innovative, handmade artist’s books, comments, “There are many wonderful, creative artists in this area who outnumber the arts venues available to present work to the public.

The Mid-City Studio Tour provides a special opportunity to see artists’ environments and processes.”
Invitations and maps for this self-guided studio tour are available before the event at Greenly Art Space (2698 Junipero Avenue #113 in Signal Hill), Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach 90803), Free Spirit Yoga (3910 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach 90807), Arts  Council for Long Beach (110 Pine Avenue, Long Beach 90802), Utopia (445 E 1st St Long Beach, CA 90802), and various It’s a Grind coffee houses in the mid-city area.

Please visit the website  http://www.midcitystudiotour.com for images, more information about the artists, and the tour map.

First Fridays in Bixby Knolls, Long Beach [June 2011]

First Fridays Long Beach — a celebration of art and music.

The mission of First Fridays Long Beach is to promote and support local artists and musicians by providing them with an outlet to showcase their work. Every first Friday night of the month, participating Bixby Knolls businesses unite to promote local artists and musicians through extended
operating hours. In doing so, we hope to encourage a dialogue between businesses, artists and the community.

First Fridays on June 3 will get us all in the pre-summer mood with an overflowing plate of fun from the dessert buffet. The district continues to bring the monthly programming of untraditional fun, hijinx, and plenty of “the unexpected.”

Ingredients for the night include: Mobile art stations, 80s dance music, spoken word, electronic grooves, improv comedy, Timstrument, community drawing, tarot cards, drag queens, face painting, First Books, antiques, piano man, Big Red Bus, and the Knolls Ranger.

We will initiate a new program called “Seniors First! at First Fridays” with the help of the Long Beach Shakespeare Company and Don Knabe’s office sponsoring a bus to bring senior citizens from Gold Star Manor to enjoy all of the festivities of the event.

When the businesses start to close, "First Fridays After Hours" begins. Nino's Italian Restaurant, The Factory, and EJ Malloy’s go late into the night with food, drinks, and great music. Why go home early? Stay out and continue the energy.

Dine on Art-Lantic Avenue at one of our tasty restaurants then grab the Big Red Bus that will transport you venue to venue from designated stops at the participating businesses.

Visit http://www.firstfridayslongbeach.com/ or the Facebook First Fridays, Long Beach event page for details including a listing of participating businesses.

Christmas Tree Recycling in Los Angeles County

From the Santa Clarita blog.

In with the new year and out with the old tree!

Well another Christmas season has come and gone.  And so the holiday aftermath begins: finishing and washing the casseroles and platters, running from store to store returning and exchanging gifts, helping the in-laws pack and getting them to the airport as soon as possible–thank goodness most of us won't have to worry about hunting down a recycling center to properly dispose of our Christmas trees!  In fact, most of us won't even have to cut them up just to stuff them in our recycle bins.

LA County, and many cities therein–City of Los Angeles included–are offering curbside recycling of trees.  Here are some general guidelines:  Get you tree at the curb by 6am of your normal trash day prior to 15 January 2011; remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, stands etc., trees should be 6 feet or less, if not then cut them.  Specifics for the City and County of Los Angeles and suburbs are listed below.

County of Los Angeles
Los Angeles County is providing CURBSIDE Christmas tree recycling through January 15, 2011.  Residents in UN-incorporated County areas can conveniently recycle their tree by placing it at curbside on their regular trash collection day.

Residents living in incorporated cities within the County can drop off their trees at designated collections sites if their city does not have curbside collection.

All ornaments, including tinsel, decorations, and metal and plastic tree stands must be removed from the tree before it can be left at the curb or turned into a collection site.

The trees collected by residential waste haulers will be recycled into compost, mulch, or ground cover.

To view more information on the County's Christmas tree recycling program, locate tree collection sites, and to see city-specific Christmas tree recycling guidelines, go to www.cleanla.com or call 1(800) CLEANLA.

The City of LA Bureau of Sanitation has expanded CURBSIDE collection for Christmas trees. If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place it inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

Using your green bin to recycle a Christmas tree?
1. REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from the tree
2. CUT tree in pieces to fit into the green bin, and
3. PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin for regular pick-up on collection day. Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch.

Residents of multifamily buildings are requested to place their Christmas tree at the curbside on the day of collection by the Bureau of Sanitation.

Visit the City website at www.lacity.org for collection day information

Recreation & Park and Fire Station locations will accept Christmas trees for ONE DAY ONLY (see date and time below). Some locations will not be open. Check the listing on this page. There will be NO giveaways and we will NOT be accepting holiday wrapping and packaging material at sites.

West Hollywood

The City of West Hollywood will offer free Christmas tree recycling from Monday, December 27, 2010 through Saturday, January 15, 2011. Please place your tree at the curb for collection on your regular trash day. Remove all decorative trimmings and the tree's base. Do not place the tree in a plastic bag, as this can prevent it from being recycled/picked-up.

For more information, call the City's Office of Environmental Services, at (323) 848-6404. For the deaf and hard of hearing, please call (323) 848-6496.

All other INCORPORATED cities (via the LA County, Department of Public Works website)
Please remove ornaments, tinsel, lights, nails, tree stands and bases. Flocked trees are accepted unless told otherwise by hauler. Place tree at curbside next to the trash containers on your regular trash day during the collection period shown below. If none shown, please contact your city for options. See below for special instructions.
