2011 Huck Finn Jubilee

Huck Finn Jubilee returns to Victorville, Friday 17 – 19 Sunday 2011. The 35 year old self proclaimed “great American party” annually celebrates the life and times of Tom and Huck, Mark Twain’s popular storybook characters.

The Jubilee is held at the 800 acre Mojave Narrows Regional Park where unlike its high desert surroundings, is an oasis bordering the Mojave River and resembles parkland near the Mississippi River. Parking is free and camping is offered.

During the three day festival you can find games that include building river rafts, climbing a greased pole, searching for nickels in a haystack and tossing horseshoes. All are free to enter, and ribbons are given to winners.

There’s a Friday night barn dance at the mountain man village, a Huck Finn look-a-like contest on Saturday and the Tom Sawyer Fence Painting Championship Sunday afternoon.

A crafts village offers items that are hand- made and uniquely American, and there are barbeque ribs, ice cream and corn on the cob in the Vittles village.

A Route 66 Car Show offers pre-1982 show car entries one free admission with one paid when arriving Saturday and Sunday. The California State Arm Wrestling Championships and the Deering Banjo Championships both are held at noon on Saturday and offer t-shirts, trophies, titles, cash and a Deering Eagle II banjo as prizes.

Main stage hosts a Mark Twain Live performance on Friday and old time country and bluegrass music with “Hee Haw’s” Roy Clark, Rodney Dillard from the Andy Griffith Show, and RFD Television’s Leroy Troy and the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band. They headline more than 30 hours of music Friday, Saturday and Father’s Day.

Music continues into the evening, and all night picking parties are held in special campgrounds on the park. The Deering Banjo Company offers a free music jam school Friday and Saturday, and workshops in fiddle, banjo, guitar, vocal harmony and songwriting continue all three days. Named 2001 Bluegrass Event of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the Jubilee also provides many informal “chat sessions” that bring both artist and fan together.

Hot air balloons rise early each day and provide aerial views of Pelican Lake, and campgrounds in Mojave Narrows. Some campsites have electrical hookups for RVs. The regional park offers fishing, horseback riding and a water splash area.

Families can also camp at Mojave Narrows Regional Park campgrounds. Camping w/electrical hook-ups + Jubilee entry package available.

Free to Be – Freedom Festival [2011]

Empowering Spirits Foundation (ESF) and Monarch Productions present the first annual Free to Be – Freedom Festival, a one-day event featuring marquee musical talent, local bands and artists, nationally known DJs coupled with educational components and empowerment ideals.  Event producers anticipate that the finalized talent line will draw between 75,000 and 80,000 attendees to Los Angeles State Historic Park, the event site.

The Freedom Festival is designed with the purpose of inspiring individuals of all backgrounds to come together and embrace the differences that make us unique. The event producers want to inspire all who attend to create positive change toward greater equality and to inspire others to do the same.

You are invited to come as you are... Free To Be gay, free to be straight, free to be fierce, free to be pierced. Embracing the gift of being free to be creative, conservative and unconventional. Free to be proud of the unique existence that you occupy. Free to be you!

One of the most important messages we want to relay is that Freedom Festival is about more than putting on a one-day music and arts festival,” said ESF Communications Director Margie M. Palmer. “Too often society pre-defines who we as individuals are supposed to be. It defines how we should look, how we should dress, and how we should behave. Through the Free to Be movement we want to encourage people to be who they are, not what they’re told, and to embrace what it is about them that makes them different, and therefore unique. We want to inspire people to make themselves at home in their own bodies, and to be comfortable in their lives.”

Monarch Productions founder Lisette Molina said that the event is about more than creating a one-day festival.  “This is about creating a movement,” Molina said. “A movement about celebrating who we are and being OK with it without worrying about the expectations of society. We hope to inspire our audience to create a shift in society. We want it to spread like wildfire. We want to empower people to be happy to be who they are and to disregard judgment,” she said.

Proceeds from Freedom Festival 2011 will benefit Empowering Spirits Foundation, a national nonprofit civil rights organization 501(c)(3).

As of this date, scheduled artists include:

Semi Precious Weapons

Venice High Centennial Celebration (1911-2011)

Join the festivities as Venice High School celebrates 100 years!

The high school in Venice, CA, with its 52 students and 8 faculty began in 1911 in a rented part of the old Lagoon Bathhouse building on Winward Avenue and Coral Canal (now Main Street).  After a couple years Venice Union Polytechnic School moved to its current 29-acre campus at Walgrove Avenue and Venice Boulevard.

In 1922, the head of the art department used three students as models for three statues representing the Mental, Physical and Spiritual.  Collectively known as Inspiration, the trio was placed in front of the school.  The Spiritual model was Myrna Williams, who changed her name to Myrna Loy and would become an immensely famous movie star and voted the "Queen of Hollywood."

Some other famous Venice alumni include Apollo 7 astronaut Walter Cunningham; footballers Larry Atkins, Leon Clarke, J.P. Losman, Dana McLemore; Skater, surfer and director Stacy Peralta; baseballers Jerry Turner and Doug Slaten; actors Beau Bridges, Gary Collins, and Crispin Glover; singer/songwriter, producer Teena Marie; founder of In-N-Out Burgers Harry Snyder.

The 1933 Long Beach earthquake destroyed the original brick buildings and the campus was rebuilt in conjunction with the Works Project Administration (WPA) while classes were held in tents.  The newer Art-Deco buildings and campus were featured prominently in the 1978 film Grease as "Rydell High."  Numerous other productions were filmed at Venice High including American History X, Nightmare on Elm Street 5, Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" and Young MC's "Principle's Office."

Today Venice High School has over 2700 students enrolled, including 500+ in its Foreign Language and International Studies Magnet.  Venice High also contains a Bilingual Business and Finance Academy and a New Media Academy.

Despite being repaired twice in the 80s, Inspiration was removed in 2000, due to years of vandalism and deterioration.  Only the Spiritual Myrna Loy statue was recreated in bronze and unveiled in front of 2000 spectators in 2010.

This year, a much larger celebration will take place over four days as Venice High celebrates its centennial.  There will be a  two-day festival featuring food, games, merchants, entertainment and live music.  Festivities also include a screening of Grease on the football field, a car show featuring the Grease Lightning car and a parade from the Venice Beach to the high school.  A time capsule and walk of fame will be unveiled and local skaters will attempt to break a Guinness World Record™ for "largest skateboarding parade."

The Garden Grove Strawberry Festival is not only one of the largest community festivals in the western US, but also one of the oldest. Held annually since 1958, the Festival is now in its 53rd year and features a parade, contests, carnival rides and more.  This years festival takes place Friday 27 through Monday 30 May.

Throughout the years, the world’s largest strawberry shortcake (which local paper reported to have weighed as much as 500 pounds), has been the centerpiece of the festival’s opening ceremonies. For the past 22 years the task has gone to Herb’s Black Forest Bakery in Fountain Valley. The mayor of Garden Grove cuts the first piece and presents the top to Miss Garden Grove, then, as many as 4,000 more slices are cut and served free to festival-goers attending the ceremonies.

Rides. The Festival features carnival rides for kids, like the Berry-Go-Round, Wet Water Ride, and Tilt-a-Whirl.  There are also rides for teens/adults such as Footloose, Fireball and the Zipper.  (The ride vendor also provides the rides for the Orange County Fair).

Parade. Floats, marching bands, local dignitaries, clowns and equestrians are all part of the exciting Saturday morning parade. Come see Miss Garden Grove Leah Cecil and her court, and Miss Outstanding Teen Jessica Tonti. Also in the parade will be the Senior King and Queen and the Tiny Tots King and Queen. Kids of all ages will enjoy meeting, Knott's Berry Farms' Snoopy, and Ronald McDonald!

Celebs. Some of the celebs on hand will be Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Raini Rodriguez (Disney’s Prom) as Grand Marshals plus Anneliese Van der Pol (That’s So Raven), Ed Arnold (The Real Orange), Kate Linder (Days of Our Lives), Valery Ortiz (Diary of a Single Mom).  After the parade you'll have the opportunity to meet celebrities and get autographs.

Contests. Many contests are held over the four days of the Festival.  The Ooey-Gooey Pie-In-the-Face is the tastiest of the contests.  A karaoke contest will determine the next Strawberry Idol.  Several beauty and talent contests will be held including the Redhead Round-Up.

The festival is a non-profit (501c3) organization.  Local charities receive up to $100,000 in funding and scholarships to local schools are given out as well.  In addition, the only food vendors allowed are charities there to raise money.
