Entrance at Mark Taper Auditorium on 5th St. From Publishers Weekly: Born in a refugee camp in 1955, Palestinian physician Abuelaish suffers a catastrophic loss when three of his daughters are killed in their home by Israeli fire in 2009. An Israeli television journalist's live broadcast of his call for help captures Israeli public and world press attention. "Most of the world has heard of the Gaza Strip," as Abuelaish says, "but few know what it's like to live here, blockaded, impoverished, year after year, decade after decade." Abuelaish portrays everyday life in Gaza and tells the remarkable story of how he came to be "the first Palestinian doctor to be on staff at an Israeli hospital." The "tortured politics of Palestine, Israel, and the Middle East" are rendered graphic by his personal accounts of "the humiliation, the fear, the physical difficulty" of border checkpoints and bulldozed homes. Abuelaish tells of the "satisfying, even wonderful" moments, "the good chapter of a bad story," as well; an infertility specialist, he is as "thoroughly smitten" with his research as he is appalled that "Gaza hospitals are rundown and can't be repaired because of an embargo is preposterous." Abuelaish knows anger, but in this impassioned, committed attempt to show the reader life on the sliver of land that is Gaza, he demonstrates that "anger is not the same as hate." By turns inspiring and heart-breaking, hopeful and horrifying, “I Shall Not Hate” is Izzeldin Abuelaish's account of an extraordinary life. A Harvard-trained Palestinian doctor who was born and raised in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and "who has devoted his life to medicine and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians" (New York Times), Abuelaish has been crossing the lines in the sand that divide Israelis and Palestinians for most of his life - as a physician who treats patients on both sides of the line, as a humanitarian who sees the need for improved health and education for women as the way forward in the Middle East. And, most recently, as the father whose daughters were killed by Israeli soldiers on January 16, 2009, during Israel's incursion into the Gaza Strip. His response to this tragedy made news and won him humanitarian awards around the world. Instead of seeking revenge or sinking into hatred, Abuelaish called for the people in the region to start talking to each other. His deepest hope is that his daughters will be "the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis." Outdoor Ice-skating in Los Angeles

The season known as "winter" does exist in several square-thousand-pockets in Los Angeles.  You can skate under the swaying palms of LA or the slightly-less-oppressive winter Valley sun.  Check out these skating options for LA County (see map at end).

Downtown On Ice

LA's original outdoor ice rink is back with 4500 square feet of fun and frolic.  Skate under the palm trees and skyscrapers that surround Pershing Square.  Skating sessions are $6/hour + $2 for skate rental.  Sessions last 1 hour followed by 30 minutes for resurfacing.  The Pershing Square rink is open 18 Nov 2010 through 17 January 2011. Hours: Mon - Thu, noon-10pm; Fri & Sat, 10am - 10pm.

LA Kings Holiday Ice

The second annual LA Kings Holiday Ice returns to LA Live under Los Angeles' official artificial Christmas tree!  The rink at Nokia Plaza is nearly twice as big as last year at 5600 square feet.  Skate with Santa nightly from 7-8pm through 22 December.  Admission is $12-unlimited including skate rental.  Rink is open from 27 Nov 2010 through 1 Jan 2011.  Hours: Weekdays, 5 - 11pm; weekends, noon - 11pm through 17 Dec; 18 Dec - 1 Jan, noon - 11pm.

CHILL At The W

Ice skating at The W Hotel Los Angeles, Westwood.  Okay, chill might be a slight misnomer--the rink is made of "hybrid" ice, but the way the weather's been lately, you can still chill literally or figuratively.  The W in Westwood has converted their pool to a rink.  The pool deck-cum-rink deck features a bar sponsored by WET and appetizers. Poolside cabanas available.  Cost is $10/hour including skate rental.  Rink open 19 Nov 2010 through 2 Jan 2011.

ICE in Santa Monica

Downtown Santa Monica again features two rinks: 400 square feet for kids 8 and under and 8000 square feet for everyone.  This year will feature floral art work beneath the ice from Ed Massey, co-founder of the public arts project, Portraits of Hope, that covered LA County's lifeguard towers this summer.  Admission is $10 including skate rental.  Season passes and lessons available.  Open 5 Nov 2010 through 15 Feb 2011.  Hours: Mon - Thu, noon - 10pm; Fri, noon - midnight; Sat, 10am - midnight; Sun, 10am - 10pm.

That's right--ice CAN exist outside your freezer in the Valley!  Check out the SFV's only outdoor rink--7000 square feet of it--at the Westfield Woodland Hills. Prices range from $11 to $15 including skate rental.  Open 5 Nov 2010 through 6 Feb 2011.  Hours: Sun - Thu 10am - 10pm; Fri & Sat, 10am - 11pm.
