Christmas Tree Recycling in Los Angeles County

From the Santa Clarita blog.

In with the new year and out with the old tree!

Well another Christmas season has come and gone.  And so the holiday aftermath begins: finishing and washing the casseroles and platters, running from store to store returning and exchanging gifts, helping the in-laws pack and getting them to the airport as soon as possible–thank goodness most of us won't have to worry about hunting down a recycling center to properly dispose of our Christmas trees!  In fact, most of us won't even have to cut them up just to stuff them in our recycle bins.

LA County, and many cities therein–City of Los Angeles included–are offering curbside recycling of trees.  Here are some general guidelines:  Get you tree at the curb by 6am of your normal trash day prior to 15 January 2011; remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, stands etc., trees should be 6 feet or less, if not then cut them.  Specifics for the City and County of Los Angeles and suburbs are listed below.

County of Los Angeles
Los Angeles County is providing CURBSIDE Christmas tree recycling through January 15, 2011.  Residents in UN-incorporated County areas can conveniently recycle their tree by placing it at curbside on their regular trash collection day.

Residents living in incorporated cities within the County can drop off their trees at designated collections sites if their city does not have curbside collection.

All ornaments, including tinsel, decorations, and metal and plastic tree stands must be removed from the tree before it can be left at the curb or turned into a collection site.

The trees collected by residential waste haulers will be recycled into compost, mulch, or ground cover.

To view more information on the County's Christmas tree recycling program, locate tree collection sites, and to see city-specific Christmas tree recycling guidelines, go to www.cleanla.com or call 1(800) CLEANLA.

The City of LA Bureau of Sanitation has expanded CURBSIDE collection for Christmas trees. If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place it inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

Using your green bin to recycle a Christmas tree?
1. REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from the tree
2. CUT tree in pieces to fit into the green bin, and
3. PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin for regular pick-up on collection day. Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch.

Residents of multifamily buildings are requested to place their Christmas tree at the curbside on the day of collection by the Bureau of Sanitation.

Visit the City website at www.lacity.org for collection day information

Recreation & Park and Fire Station locations will accept Christmas trees for ONE DAY ONLY (see date and time below). Some locations will not be open. Check the listing on this page. There will be NO giveaways and we will NOT be accepting holiday wrapping and packaging material at sites.
