Help Expand CicLAvia for 2011!

CicLAvia

The CicLAvia board is busy working with Mayor Villaraigosa, the City of Los Angeles, and other allies, supporters, partners, and YOU to make CicLAvia bigger and better in 2011.

UPCOMING CICLAVIA EVENTS - APRIL 10th AND MORE!
Get your skates tuned! Your shoes laced! Your chains greased! Sunday April 10th 2011 will be the next CicLAvia! It'll be nearly the same route as last October's wildly successful 7.5-mile route from Boyle Heights to East Hollywood. We're also scheduling similar events in July and in October. For later 2011 events, CicLAvia plans to continue the central route, and make it even longer by adding spurs into Chinatown, South L.A. and/or Boyle Heights/East L.A.
SUPPORT CICLAVIA!
Please contribute to CicLAvia via our Kickstarter Campaign. For just $11, you'll receive a custom spoke card, designed by acclaimed CicLAvia grafix genius Colleen Corcoran! Donations that come in through Kickstarter will go toward things like publicity, signage, printing, outreach, permitting, design, staffing, freeway off-ramp closures, porta-potties, and mucho mas!
CicLAvia is also raising monies though grants from foundations and funding from event sponsors. If you or your business would like to sponsor CicLAvia in 2011, please check out the CicLAvia Sponsorship details online.
HELP EXPAND CICLAVIA!
In Colombia, Bogotá hosts 80 miles worth of ciclovĂas every Sunday! CicLAvia is looking to expand and to reach even more Los Angeles neighborhoods. CicLAvia has begun to work with folks in South L.A., and soon Chinatown and Boyle Heights, to see how and where to add new spurs from the central route. CicLAvia has also been talking with lots of folks interested in CicLAvia in the Long Beach/Harbor area, Culver City, West L.A., Santa Monica, Pasadena, the San Fernando Valley, and other locations. We'll be forming volunteer host committees for these areas. If you're interested in getting involved in helping expand CicLAvia to your neighborhood, email us at CicLAviala@gmail.com.

Underground In Your Underwear!

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!  Time to drop trou and go for a ride!  On Sunday 9 January, Angelenos will be joining communities across the globe in riding the Metro sans pants!  Note to Brit-Brit and Paris, if y'all come, you best wear undergarments lest you be under arrest.  Then again, i hear Lynwood is lovely this time of year!  (Not).

Apparently, the Facebook event page is only viewable by members of the group, so i am re-posting, as requested, for everyone to see, with additional info.

For the 3rd year in a row, GLA will be participating in Improv Everywhere's
international mission, NO PANTS SUBWAY RIDE (it's their 10th annual edition
of this mission)on Sunday, January 9, 2011!

We encourage everyone to travel pantsless throughout the Metro system
that day.

THE MAIN RIDE will begin in downtown LA and will travel westbound on
the Red Line to Hollywood. Please be at Union Station by 2:00pm. That
should give you enough time to de-pants, mill around the station like
the other commuters, and meet up with friends. Just give yourself a
few minutes to get down to the Red Line platform. We will board the
North Hollywood-bound train that leaves Union Station at 2:34pm and
disembark at Hollywood & Highland. Since Union Station is an origin
point for both the Red and Purple Lines, check the overhead video monitors
on the boarding platform to see if the departing train is a North
Hollywood (Red Line) train or a Wilshire/Western (Purple Line) train.
There are also electronic signs at the front and on the sides of each
train telling you which one it is. It's important to check the signs
because our train may be departing from either side of the platform
(of course, you could also just follow the pantsless horde of people).

Here is the MAIN RIDE schedule:

Departure Time from Union Station - Arrival Time at Hollywood/Highland Station
------------------------- -------- ------------------------- -----------------
             2:34pm              -          2:55pm

If you have time and the inclination (or you just really enjoy the
state of pantlessness), you can participate in OPTIONAL, preliminary
rides that will be traveling from both ends of the Gold Line in
Pasadena and East LA, from the Red Line in North Hollywood, and from
the Purple Line in Koreatown to Union Station. Ride captains will
begin gathering agents at their respective stations at 1pm, and
they'll have you at Union Station by 2pm for the main event. They will
be there to brief the agents, to answer any questions, and to help
anyone overcome their shyness. You are welcome to start at whichever
station is most convenient to you.

Here is the OPTIONAL RIDE schedule for each station:

Origin Station                                  - Departure Time - Arrival Time at Union Station
-------------- -------------- ------------------------- ----
Red Line North Hollywood Station                -    1:25pm      -      1:55pm

Gold Line Atlantic Station (East Los Angeles)    -    1:25pm      -      1:49pm

Gold Line Sierra Madre Villa Station (Pasadena)  -    1:24pm      -      1:52pm

Purple Line Wilshire/Western Station (Koreatown) -    1:37pm      -      1:50pm

At 1pm, meet the ride captains at these locations:

Agents Stripes & Antarctica: the red Metro North Hollywood sign along
the east side of Lankershim
Agent Zero: the bike racks east of the Atlantic station at the NW
corner of Atlantic and Pomona
Agent Blackhart: the 4th floor of the parking structure by the ticket
vending machines at the entrance to the Sierra Madre Villa station
Agents Ooh-Kla & Landshark: the red Metro Wilshire/Western sign on the
NE corner of Wilshire & Western

Ride captains will be leaving promptly to get to Union Station on time
for the main ride.

We'll leave it to your discretion when and where you want to de-pants,
but please be pantsless before stepping onto the boarding platform.

Please buy a ticket ($1.50: one-way, $3.00: round-trip, $6.00: day
pass). The citation for evading fare payment is $250.00, an
unnecessary and expensive risk. We recommend the day pass, especially
if you will be participating in the optional, preliminary rides.

There are no set rules, but we suggest that if anyone asks why we're
not wearing pants, it's best to give a simple answer such as "I forgot
them". And it is of the utmost importance that we act casual, like
it's an ordinary day on the Metro.

You should be fully clothed except for pants. The type of underwear
you want to wear will be left to your discretion, but we just ask you
to exercise a little common sense. The amount of skin you want to
expose is your choice, but know that any citation for indecent
exposure is a risk you take ON YOUR OWN.

Some additional suggestions:

-Agents should be dispersed fairly evenly on each platform so that we are
distributed fairly evenly on the train instead of clumped up in one or two cars.

-Bring some sort of bag in which to carry your pants. It's always good
to have them with you in the unlikely event you have to re-pants.

-In the event that the Red Line train is too full for the MAIN ride,
we'll have some agents stay behind and wait for the next train leaving
Union Station at 2:46pm.

-In the event that you miss any of the trains on the OPTIONAL ride,
they run every 12 minutes, so you should be able to catch up with
everyone at Union Station.

Christmas Tree Recycling in Los Angeles County

From the Santa Clarita blog.

In with the new year and out with the old tree!

Well another Christmas season has come and gone.  And so the holiday aftermath begins: finishing and washing the casseroles and platters, running from store to store returning and exchanging gifts, helping the in-laws pack and getting them to the airport as soon as possible–thank goodness most of us won't have to worry about hunting down a recycling center to properly dispose of our Christmas trees!  In fact, most of us won't even have to cut them up just to stuff them in our recycle bins.

LA County, and many cities therein–City of Los Angeles included–are offering curbside recycling of trees.  Here are some general guidelines:  Get you tree at the curb by 6am of your normal trash day prior to 15 January 2011; remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, stands etc., trees should be 6 feet or less, if not then cut them.  Specifics for the City and County of Los Angeles and suburbs are listed below.

County of Los Angeles
Los Angeles County is providing CURBSIDE Christmas tree recycling through January 15, 2011.  Residents in UN-incorporated County areas can conveniently recycle their tree by placing it at curbside on their regular trash collection day.

Residents living in incorporated cities within the County can drop off their trees at designated collections sites if their city does not have curbside collection.

All ornaments, including tinsel, decorations, and metal and plastic tree stands must be removed from the tree before it can be left at the curb or turned into a collection site.

The trees collected by residential waste haulers will be recycled into compost, mulch, or ground cover.

To view more information on the County's Christmas tree recycling program, locate tree collection sites, and to see city-specific Christmas tree recycling guidelines, go to www.cleanla.com or call 1(800) CLEANLA.

The City of LA Bureau of Sanitation has expanded CURBSIDE collection for Christmas trees. If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place it inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

Using your green bin to recycle a Christmas tree?
1. REMOVE all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from the tree
2. CUT tree in pieces to fit into the green bin, and
3. PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin for regular pick-up on collection day. Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch.

Residents of multifamily buildings are requested to place their Christmas tree at the curbside on the day of collection by the Bureau of Sanitation.

Visit the City website at www.lacity.org for collection day information

Recreation & Park and Fire Station locations will accept Christmas trees for ONE DAY ONLY (see date and time below). Some locations will not be open. Check the listing on this page. There will be NO giveaways and we will NOT be accepting holiday wrapping and packaging material at sites.

In the Caldwell Gallery

Steve Roden: In Between, a 20 Year Survey
Opening: September 11, 7-9pm
Exhibition: September 12, 2010 - January 9, 2011
Curator: Howard N. Fox
Gallery Hours: Noon-5pm (closed Mondays)

Pasadena artist Steve Roden is known internationally as an abstract painter, sculptor, installation artist, and sound artist whose works employ a strong presence of irregular geometries—a distinctive palette that ranges from somber tones, bright colors, and segmented all-over compositions. This is the first exhibition to bring together Roden's art in all its divergent forms and reveals his work as a homogenous, conceptually coherent practice.
In the Mezzanine Gallery

NewTown: Convergences
Opening: September 11, 7-9pm
Exhibition: September 12, 2010 - January 9, 2011
Gallery Hours: Noon-5pm (closed Mondays)

In one of NewTown’s most ambitious gallery shows, eleven digital and media artists appropriate the ubiquitous tools of their media into cutting-edge, highly personal, curiously accessible experimental art forms. Convergences seamlessly integrates media with sculpture and installation into an immersive experience. The exhibition will be a multi-station journey through a labyrinth of interactions, aesthetics and technologies, from garage pillaged elegance to experimental circuitry. The exhibition will feature work by artists; Nancy Buchanan and Ismael De Anda, Claudia Bucher, Robert Ladislas Derr, Heidi Kumao, Katja Loher, Lisa Mann, Anne Oren, Steve Shoffner, Rachel Siegel, Trixy Sweetvittles, and Laura Yilmaz.

In the Artist Studio @ One Colorado

Carly Steward: The Arrangement

24 Smith Alley, Pasadena | View Map
Exhibition: Through January 10, 2011
Gallery Hours: Noon-9pm (Wednesdays), 10am-6pm (Saturdays & Sundays)

One Colorado artist-in-residence Carly Steward's The Arrangement creates an ongoing collaborative installation between viewer and artist. It explores elements of exhibition design, lighting, wall color, space arrangement and display tools. The exhibition space is filled with empty, movable display objects varying in scale, form, and color such as shaped pedestals, build-ups and mounts. Visiting both the exhibition space and the studio space will give the visitor a behind the scenes look at the installation process as well as experience the overall installation as a display making factory.
