The NFL In LA

Gilmore Stadium home of the Bulldogs (now CBS Television City)
Ever since the Raiders and the Rams left Los Angeles after the 1994 season, there has been a vacuum in the second largest media market in the country.  At first, both the League and the city wanted to bring a team back to the Southland.  Almost immediately, the Browns, Bengals, Buccaneers and Seahawks were rumored to be possible replacements–none of which came to fruition.

Los Angeles Bulldogs (1936-48)
A major sticking point with the League was the question of where a possible new team would play.  Attendance had dwindled for the Rams at the Big A down in the OC.  The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was too old and required costly repairs due to the '94 Northridge Earthquake.  In addition, the Coliseum had a capacity of more than 90,000, which was hard to fill.  If the stadium couldn't meet an attendance threshold then the local telecast blackout rule could not be broken which was often the case in the Raiders' situation.  Also the case: the Coliseum had no club seats or luxury boxes–a revenue must in this day and age.  In the following years there were several grand schemes for new NFL venues in LA and many more rumors of teams that would possibly make the move to sunny southern California.

Proposed and now abandoned Coliseum renovation.
Proposals for stadia in the Southland included those near Staples Center (2001), the City of Industry, Carson, Chavez Ravine (next to Dodger Stadium), Anaheim and renovating renovating both the Coliseum and the Rose Bowl.   As rumors of possible moves by the Jaguars, Vikings, Chargers, Falcons, Saints, Colts, 49ers and even the Raiders and Rams came and went, it eventually became clear that the second largest media market was more valuable as a bargaining chip than as an serious home to an NFL franchise.  Nearly half the cities in the League can thank Los Angeles for gaining an expansion team, a new stadium and/or an extended contract.

Now, as NFL stadium hopes renew with the proposal by AEG to replace the old wing (West Hall) of the LA Convention Center with an NFL stadium next to Staples Center/adjacent to LA Live, one wonders what name an LA franchise should have.

What should be the name of a future NFL team in LA?

Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Know How Not To Heat Your Home.

A not uncommon story:  "Two die of carbon monoxide poison while trying to heat their residence."  The following is a story reported by Los Angeles Sherrif's Department, but such a tragic incident may happen anywhere.  Read the LASD story below and continue reading about CO dangers in your own home from the CDC and how to avoid it:

Two women tragically lost their lives in Willowbrook when they apparently used their kitchen oven to provide heat inside their home. They were found Saturday at about 4:30PM. Preliminarily, Carbon monoxide fumes from the oven are believed to have resulted in their deaths.

At 4:30 PM, 01/01/11, deputies from Century Sheriff's Station responded to a rescue call in the 2200 block of El Segundo Boulevard, Willowbrook.

When they arrived, they were met by a family member who told them that after not receiving a response to phone calls, she drove there in order to check on the 63-year old woman and her 81 year-old mother. The family member said she went inside the residence and immediately smelled a strong odor of gas. She found the oven to be turned on and closed the oven door before quickly exiting the residence. She then called Century Sheriff's Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for emergency help.

Hearing the family member's concerns and observations, deputies quickly entered the residence and found the two victims apparently deceased.

Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters also responded and detected extremely high levels of carbon monoxide within the residence. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide investigators responded to the residence to conduct their investigation. Century Sheriff's Station on-call clergy personnel were also summoned to the scene and assisted deputies with grieving family members.

Preliminarily, it appears as though the victims had opened the oven door and turned the oven on in order to heat their residence.

Carbon Monoxide information from the US Center for Disease Control (CDC):

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death.

Where is CO found?

CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those produced by cars and trucks, small gasoline engines, stoves, lanterns, burning charcoal and wood, and gas ranges and heating systems. CO from these sources can build up in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces. People and animals in these spaces can be poisoned by breathing it.

What are the symptoms of CO poisoning?

The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. High levels of CO inhalation can cause loss of consciousness and death. Unless suspected, CO poisoning can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms mimic other illnesses. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from CO poisoning before ever experiencing symptoms.

How does CO poisoning work?

Red blood cells pick up CO quicker than they pick up oxygen. If there is a lot of CO in the air, the body may replace oxygen in blood with CO. This blocks oxygen from getting into the body, which can damage tissues and result in death.
How CO enters red blood cell

Who is at risk from CO poisoning?

All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning. Certain groups — unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems — are more susceptible to its effects. Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. Fatality is highest among Americans 65 and older.

NEVER heat your home by using a natural gas/propane stove or oven,  kerosene/propane space heater, or charcoal grill. Carbon Monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of the fossil fuels - gas, oil, coal and wood used in boilers, engines, oil burners, gas fires, water heaters, solid fuel appliances and open fires.

For more info, see the CDC website.

Gaza Dr. I. Abuelaish Speaks at LA Central Library
Wednesday, January 12th 2011  7:00 pm
Los Angeles, CA

Gaza resident pens 'I Shall Not Hate' after Israeli attack

He lost 3 daughters to Israel's "Cast Lead" and has written a book, "I Shall Not Hate." At 7 PM, free, in the Aloud series, at 630 W. 5th St. in dntn L.A., but reservations advised, at 213/228-7025 or www.aloud.org.

The book should be available for purchase & signing.

Parking lots are to west and south of the library - no validation on Wed. Entrance at Mark Taper Auditorium on 5th St.

From Publishers Weekly:

Born in a refugee camp in 1955, Palestinian physician Abuelaish suffers a catastrophic loss when three of his daughters are killed in their home by Israeli fire in 2009. An Israeli television journalist's live broadcast of his call for help captures Israeli public and world press attention. "Most of the world has heard of the Gaza Strip," as Abuelaish says, "but few know what it's like to live here, blockaded, impoverished, year after year, decade after decade." Abuelaish portrays everyday life in Gaza and tells the remarkable story of how he came to be "the first Palestinian doctor to be on staff at an Israeli hospital." The "tortured politics of Palestine, Israel, and the Middle East" are rendered graphic by his personal accounts of "the humiliation, the fear, the physical difficulty" of border checkpoints and bulldozed homes. Abuelaish tells of the "satisfying, even wonderful" moments, "the good chapter of a bad story," as well; an infertility specialist, he is as "thoroughly smitten" with his research as he is appalled that "Gaza hospitals are rundown and can't be repaired because of an embargo is preposterous." Abuelaish knows anger, but in this impassioned, committed attempt to show the reader life on the sliver of land that is Gaza, he demonstrates that "anger is not the same as hate."

By turns inspiring and heart-breaking, hopeful and horrifying, “I Shall Not Hate” is Izzeldin Abuelaish's account of an extraordinary life. A Harvard-trained Palestinian doctor who was born and raised in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and "who has devoted his life to medicine and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians" (New York Times), Abuelaish has been crossing the lines in the sand that divide Israelis and Palestinians for most of his life - as a physician who treats patients on both sides of the line, as a humanitarian who sees the need for improved health and education for women as the way forward in the Middle East. And, most recently, as the father whose daughters were killed by Israeli soldiers on January 16, 2009, during Israel's incursion into the Gaza Strip. His response to this tragedy made news and won him humanitarian awards around the world. Instead of seeking revenge or sinking into hatred, Abuelaish called for the people in the region to start talking to each other. His deepest hope is that his daughters will be "the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis."
