Mow Down Air Pollution [2011]

The South Coast Air Quality Management District's popular “Mow Down Air Pollution” program, now in its ninth year, gives Southern California residents an opportunity to help reduce air pollution and save money by exchanging a working gasoline-powered lawn mower for a new battery-electric model.  Residents will be able to save hundreds of dollars on their upgrade and have five models of electric mowers from which to chose at eight locations throughout AQMD's jurisdiction.  This year, AQMD has 66,000 electric mowers ranging in price from $100 to $230 (regularly $399-$699).

Exchanging a mower is easy and convenient and participants never have to leave their car. Upon arrival, workers will remove the old gas mower from the vehicle and drain it of hazardous fluids prior to its destruction at a metal recycling facility. After payment is made, attendants will place the new, boxed mower in the customer’s vehicle. The entire process takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Residents must pre-register to participate in the lawn mower exchange program by visiting www.aqmd.gov and clicking on the lawn mower exchange banner or by calling 1-888-425-6247. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on April 20 and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Telephone registration is also available in English and Spanish.

Choose from these five models of electric mowers (full specs listed on registration page):
